Video using the AEE MINI DV (MD80) video camera

Posted on 13. Oct, 2010 by in Video Cards

The video was taken with the AEE MD80 video camera mounted on the dash (clipped to the GPS mount). The video camera takes microSD memory cards. This video was taken using the card that came in the package. It is a somewhat slow card which resulted in around 20 FPS rather than the expected 30 FPS. I will test it using a Class 6 microSD later. Audio is very sensitive. Given the cameras extremely small size (2″ tall and 50 grams) it did an adequate job. Definitely not a video camera to use if you need alot of detail. Good for track events and other sports. Review: terracode.com www.terracode.com
Video Rating: 4 / 5

This video shows you how to capture video from a mini DV camcorder. My particular camcorder is a Sony DCR-HC62 but the process is pretty similar between different mini DV camcorders. First you need a firewire cable (IEEE 1394 or i.LINK). My camera didnt come with one, it comes with a USB cable which is just for photos. You can get them from Best Buy, etc, but I recommend getting one online. Best Buy charges around , but on Amazon you can get them for as cheap as .65 plus shipping. You need a 4-pin to 6-pin male to male firewire cable (4 pin side for cam, 6 for PC). You plug the cable into the computers firewire port. If you dont have a firewire port in your computer, you can buy a firewire card and install it. You can get them for anywhere from to or so. Next, turn the camera on and set it to playback mode. You need some kind of video editing software to capture your video. I use Sony Vegas 6.0 but theres also Pinnacle, Nero, Adobe Premier, Ulead, and some others. Youtube recommends using H.264 or MPG2 encoding for uploads to youtube. Vegas 6.0 is a bit old and doesnt compress in H.264 and you need an extra license to use MPG2 which I dont have. So I use WMV 3MBPS and it looks pretty good. Render your video and upload it to youtube.

@FotoEpicRu The GoPro and VholdR are good cameras. They both have models that do 1080P and are relatively small, but not quite as tiny as the MD80.

As you mark – “..Definitely not a video camera to use if you need alot of detail…”. Pretty clear, but give me please advise – what kind of small camera good enough ti capture alot of detail? May be you know ?
    Thanks again!

@Francuz088 This community is only 10 years old and this road is around 2 years old. There are areas of San Diego that really need to be repaved. Sorry to hear your roads in your area of Russia are not very smooth.

@2UpDuc This is the original AEE MD80 that does 640×480 (as opposed to the fake MD80 that does 720×480 and only worked for 1 week). The video you see was the cam mounted inside a SUV. I have another video on Youtube that has the cam mounted on a Z4 with a panavise windshield mount for a track event a Las Vegas Speedway.

Если это действительно та маленькая камера,то снимает отлично!!!
p.s. когда у нас в РФ такие дороги будут?))))

Hi, I saw your review on this cam. Looks like I got the FAKE cam. 720×480 / 30fps. I just recorded 8 minutes of video and the file is huge. Im wondering if you knew how to change the resolution and fps of this cam?
    Cool panavise mount!

@helmik123 Best the AEE MD80 cam can do is 20 FPS even with a SanDisk class 6 card. The ‘Fake’ MD80 appear to do 30 FPS at 720×480.

Do you have windows XP, or 7 or Vista? I’ve been having trouble with capturing on windows 7, and vista, sometimes on XP as well. It may have to do with the drivers and I lost the CD it came with. Any Ideas?

@BlueDudeCC Yes it will…but it wont be good quality.

If you dont have a firewire port…see my video “How to transfer MiniDV to a computer”

    14. Oct, 2010

@kingpen408 Yes you do need a firewire. If you dont have one see my video recently uploaded called “How to transfer MiniDV to a computer” and ill tell you what your options are if you dont already have that port.

  44. clubcar98

    14. Oct, 2010

@8bennugent Rewind and record. Also make sure on the tape bottom the switch isnt on Save.

If its glitching, you need to get and run a MiniDV head cleaner for 10 seconds to clean the heads. I talk about that a bit in my MiniDv to computer video.

    14. Oct, 2010

XP doesn’t react (like when I use USB) it says firewire port is working properly but hasn’t worked with two minidvs, there’s just no reaction-doesn’t say “not recognized” I read you don’t need extra driver in xp but seems like it does.
